WELCOME!

Welcome to the Montgomery County, Maryland Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) website. The Montgomery County CERT Program is managed by Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service. 2012 has been a very busy year for the volunteer organization.

In addition to our annual support and exhibition at the Montgomery County Agricultural Fair in August, we actively participated in CERTCON 2012 - the second annual conference which brings together the various CERT organizations around the National Capital Region to participate in discussions and exercises. This year's CERTCON was held at Georgetown University. In reflecting back over the course of 2012, Montgomery County CERT has participated in many events. Additionally, it successfully deployed to provide shelter operations support during the response and recovery period of Hurricane Sandy that ravaged the East Coast in late October.

JOINT FORCES HEADQUARTERS (August)
The Joint Forces Headquarters - National Capital Region (JFHQ-NCR) hosted their Annual Force Protection Exposition at Fort McNair, Washington, D.C. in late August. The Exposition theme was "Partners in Preparedness." It was intended to bring together professionals in broad aspects of Force Protection (antiterrorism, intelligence, OPSEC, cyber defense, law enforcement, and emergency management - to include CERT) for presentations and discussions with subject-matter experts. Montgomery County CERT received compliments from the organizers in participating in this important event.

PENTAGON FORCE PROTECTION AGENCY EXPO (September)
In mid-September, the Pentagon Force Protection Agency (PFPA) and Washington Headquarters Services Offices of Emergency Management hosted a National Preparedness Expo in the Pentagon's center court. Montgomery County CERT was among many DoD and Civilian agencies that deal with emergency preparedness, response, and mitigation. It was another successful event for Montgomery County CERT.

NEEDIEST KIDS GOLF TOURNAMENT in Potomac, MD (October 4 - 7)
CERT members provided mobility assistance during the four day golf tournament. Our CERT Operations Manager deployed a two shift system which successfully addressed the need of our client over the four days. We look forward to future opportunities to provide such support.

GREAT SOUTHEAST SHAKEOUT (October 18th)
Montgomery County CERT will practiced the “Drop, Cover and Hold On,” drill on Thursday, October 18th. The drill was a regional opportunity to practice how to be safer during large earthquakes. In addition to participating in the drill as a volunteer organization, several CERT members were invited to Montgomery College to assist the college’s efforts with the drill and also to distribute important information on emergency preparedness.

HUGHES NETWORK SYSTEMS, LLC ANNUAL HEALTH FAIR in Germantown, MD (October 23rd)
Montgomery County CERT members participated in a emergency preparedness fair at the Hughes facility in Germantown. We were well represented at this event.

HEALTH AND WELLNESS COMMUNITY FAIR in Gaithersburg, MD(October 24th)
Just one day following the Fair at Hughes, Montgomery Station Family Services, Inc. extended an invitation to Montgomery County CERT to participate at their Health and Wellness Community Fair on Wednesday, October 24th from 10:00am to 2:00pm. CERT set up a table and provided education material on emergency preparedness and general CERT information. It was another success for us!

CAPSHIELD (October 11th)
CapShield successfully played a valuable role in CapShield 2012. For more information on this annual event in which Montgomery County CERT routinely participates, please contact our Operations Manager, This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it

Social Media and Montgomery County CERT

We have established an online presence by creating a Facebook page and Twitter page. Our Facebook page can be found at https://www.facebook.com/MontCoCERT and our Twitter handle is @MontCoCERT. The purpose behind the social media sites is to provide another mechanism to communicate not only with CERT members but also with the general public. CERT members have been monitoring, tweeting, and posting on various topics. Followers on Twitter and “Likes” on Facebook are steadily increasing. CERT Officers have begun to look at the feasibility of potentially collaborating with fellow CERT organizations on the value of social media during emergencies and how CERT members can be utilized advantageously to provide assistance for emergency officials/agencies.
